The Southern Cross Model is designed to give you more focused learning and more control over the way you study.?

The Hotel School will be rolling out Southern Cross University's new innovative model for its Postgraduate courses in 2022. However, please note that this change will not take effect for all Undergraduate courses until 2023.

The model provides guided, and active learning ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapps focused on supporting student success. The new model divides the academic calendar year into six study terms of six teaching weeks each.

This allows students to study subjects in six-week blocks.

The standard full-time study load is eight subjects a year across the six terms. For domestic students who want to study a full-time study load to finish their degree within the 'standard' timeframe, and for?onshore international students?who must meet full-time study visa requirements.

The recommended enrolment plan is below:

Term 1? Term 2 Term 3 Term 4 Term 5 Summer Term
Unit 1 Enrolled Enrolled Enrolled Enrolled Enrolled
Unit 2 Enrolled ?Enrolled Enrolled

Immersing in one or two subjects at once means you can enjoy deeper learning, with greater focus and fewer competing demands on your time. Assessments are more evenly spaced out during the year, giving you a greater chance of success in your studies.

How does it work?

  • Six terms of six teaching weeks each
  • Complete one or two units per Term
  • An annual minimum of six (for domestic students on FEE-HELP, Youth Support or Austudy Allowance) or eight units (for international onshore students) and a maximum of 12 units per year in a full-time study load
  • Take a term off a year or do more study when you can.

How does the new academic model affect me?

Courses that will be offered under the new Southern Cross Model from 2022 onwards will include all postgraduate courses:

  • Graduate Certificate of Business in Global Hotel Leadership
  • Graduate Diploma of Business in Global Hotel Leadership
  • Master of Business in Global Hotel Leadership.

From 2023, all undergraduate courses will also be delivered in the new Southern Cross Model. Undergraduate courses include:

  • Diploma in Hotel Management
  • Associate Degree of International Hotel and Tourism
  • Bachelor of Business in Hotel Management.

If you are a postgraduate student graduating in 2021, this change will not affect you. Similarly, if you are an undergraduate student graduating in 2021 or 2022, this change will not apply to you either.

What is considered a full-time study load?

International Students

An international full-time study load is a minimum of eight units (96 credit points) per year (over six terms) and a maximum of 12 units per year.

It may be possible for students to complete up to 12 units (144 credit points) in a year, depending on unit availability in your degree, in order to accelerate course completion and graduate early.

Domestic Students

A domestic full-time study load is a minimum of six units (for FEE-HELP, Youth Support or Austudy Allowance eligibility purposes) and a maximum of 12 units per year. However, domestic students might want to study eight units a year across the six terms in order to complete their degree within the 'standard' timeframe.

It may be possible for students to complete up to 12 units (144 credit points) in a year, depending on unit availability in your degree, in order to accelerate course completion and graduate early.

For domestic students who are seeking to retain full-time status in order to receive the?Youth Support or Austudy Allowance (Service Australia Payments), this full-time load is defined as 75% of a standard study load.

So, for courses that are one year or more in duration, students will need to study at least six units across the year, with at least three of those units studied in the first half of the year (completed by July). Please note, these payments are also contingent on other eligibility criteria.
