Studying English literatures will teach you to think creatively about the English language and what texts do with it. You will explore prose, poetry, drama and film, and develop a critical perspective on the many kinds of texts surrounding us every day.
You will gain skills sought after in such employment areas as academia, publishing and teaching. These skills include strong analytical thinking, exceptional written and oral communication skills, and the capacity to appreciate differences in cultural perspectives. 
At UOW, English literature is examined in terms of style, theme and form, and in relation to questions of race, gender, sexuality, class and national identity. This major introduces you to a broad range of novels, poetry, essays, short stories, life writing, film, diaries, letters and graphic novels from medieval to modern times, with a strong international focus. You will explore topics including Australian literature, romantic poetry, US literature, World Literature, Victorian literature, Shakespeare, Indigenous literature, and gender and sexuality in fiction and film. 
In addition to the English literatures major, you will choose a minor or a second major from the Bachelor of Arts offerings.
