Study sequences for students commencing in Autumn 2026

UOW Law’s 铿乺st-year curriculum and support program experience is designed to give you the best chance at success.

From your very first session studying Law in Autumn, the School of Law introduces a unique learning structure called PODS. Each POD consists of about 25 students, allowing you to attend all your Autumn session classes with the same group. Our research indicates that this system greatly aids in the transition to tertiary law studies. It promotes the development of friendships and study groups, and establishes a supportive network. Please be aware that this applies only to seminar enrolments for the Autumn session. In the Spring session, students will have the flexibility to enrol in any available seminar class options.

Extensions may be granted by the Subject Coordinator in accordance with the based on compassionate, compelling and/or extenuating circumstances (eg illness), or in accordance with reasonable adjustments in a student’s Access Plan. Students can apply for academic consideration via SOLS.

For all other enquiries, use the guide below to quickly work out who to contact. Start with the role that best matches your issue and follow the 'How' line so your enquiry reaches the right person the first time.

Seminar Leader

Role: Your weekly teacher in each subject and first academic contact for the weekly learning of the subject - seminar preparation, in-class activities, skills practice, and staying on track.

Who: For each subject, your Seminar Leader's name and email are listed in the Subject Outline and on Moodle (Teaching Team / staff contact area).

Contact when:

• you missed a class and need to know how to catch up and stay on track
• you’re confused about where something sits in Moodle (readings, activities, assessment instructions)
• you're unsure how to improve your participation in seminars
• you have a question about feedback on your assessment

How: Email using the address listed in the Subject Outline or subject Moodle site (Teaching Team/ staff contact area)

Rule: Seminar leaders can help you re-orient and move forward, but they are not there to re-teach seminar content by email or appointment.

Subject Coordinator

Role: The person responsible for how the subject runs overall, including subject content, readings, assessment settings, and the consistent application of subject rules.

Who: The Subject Coordinator for each subject is listed below and also in the relevant Subject Outline and Moodle site.

Contact when:

• you need clarification on assessment instructions/requirements (use the Moodle assessment Q&A forum first, if one is available)
• you have a formal query about assessment marks or formal feedback processes
• you have a question about Academic Consideration affecting the one subject
• your Seminar Leader has advised you to escalate the query to the Subject Coordinator
• the Subject Coordinator is also your Seminar Leader and your query relates to seminar learning

How: Email the Subject Coordinator using the address listed in the Subject Outline or subject Moodle site (Teaching Team/staff contact area)

Rule: First ensure your question is not already answered, for example, in the Subject Outline, subject Moodle site or . If it’s still unclear, email with your name and student number, the instruction/issue you’re referring to, and what you’ve already checked.

First Year Coordinator (FYC), Law

Role: Oversees the first-year program experience across subjects (transition, POD/first-year program structure, and escalation for cross-subject issues) and helps connect you to the right support.

Who: Yvonne Apolo

Contact when:

• the issue affects multiple first-year subjects (eg illness or major disruption during session)
• you have an Academic Consideration question affecting more than one subject
• you’re stuck on a first-year program/POD/seminar enrolment question and can’t work out where to go
• you need help making a plan to stabilise your progress across subjects or you’re unsure what to prioritise

Rule: Use this role when the issue is ‘bigger than one subject’ or you genuinely don’t know where to start.

Head of Students (HoSt), Law

Role: A School-level decision-maker who can approve enrolment variations and other exceptions under UOW rules - especially where a request goes beyond what Subject Coordinators or the First Year Coordinator can approve.

Who: The current Head of Students for Law is listed on the School's 'Our people' page.

Contact via when:

• you are seeking credit for prior learning, course transfer, campus change, or similar program-level approvals 
• you need leave of absence from your studies
• you are seeking a course-rule variation (eg waiver of prerequisites)
• the First Year Coordinator has advised you to escalate the query to the Law HoSt

How: .

Rule: The HoSt is not the best first stop for general study or assessment questions. Think of this role as ‘formal approvals and exceptions’ only.

Spring Session 2026

You will be able to access a full Subject Outline for each subject on the relevant subject Moodle site. Moodle sites can be accessed via SOLS from the Monday of Orientation week.

ACCESS SOLS

Before you buy

• WHAT?  Buy the listed edition (content and page references differ across editions).
• WHY?  Invigilated on-campus exams are open-book: printed notes and hardcopy textbooks are permitted; electronic devices are not. Consider this when choosing hardcopy vs eBook.
• WHEN?  By Week 1: you need to complete readings before each seminar.
• HOW?  Through the online or on campus.
