Sustainability report shows real-world impact on climate, equity and education

From Antarctica to India, UOW research and partnerships are driving global progress on the UN Sustainable Development Goals

As the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp of ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp (UOW) celebrates its 50th anniversary, the 2024 Sustainable Development Goals Report demonstrates how its research, partnerships and innovation are making tangible contributions to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor G.Q. Max Lu AO said the report reflected UOW’s commitment to a sustainable and equitable future.

“This report is more than a set of rankings, it’s a record of real-world impact. As we celebrate our 50-year milestone, it highlights how our people, partnerships and research are solving global challenges. From clean energy to social inclusion, we’re turning ideas into action and creating lasting change,” Professor Lu said.

UOW ranked 31st in the world in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, placing in the top 100 globally for 14 of the 17 SDGs, including being ranked 10th for Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), 11th for Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) and 21st for Climate Action (SDG 13).

Sustainable Development Goals Report highlights:

Environment and Climate Action: UOW researchers uncovered the causes of Antarctica’s most extreme heatwave, revealed the Great Barrier Reef’s accelerating warming, and led studies on bushfire frequency and microplastic pollution.

Industry and Energy Transformation: Through partnerships with industry and government, UOW leads in clean energy innovation, renewable technologies and sustainable manufacturing. Operational gains include a 15 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2019, an 81 per cent reduction in paper use, and the introduction of electric campus shuttle buses.

Health and Wellbeing: UOW research teams advanced public health outcomes through AI-assisted suicide prevention, home-based cardiac rehabilitation, and early childhood nutrition programs.

Social Equity and Inclusion: UOW was named Australia’s top university for equity by the Australian Financial Review, with 40 per cent of students from underrepresented backgrounds. Initiatives such as Pulse Pantry and the Sustainable Futures Equity Scholarship supported students experiencing hardship.

Global Footprint: UOW’s expanding global network, including campuses in Dubai, Hong Kong, Malaysia and India, reinforced its dedication to accessible, inclusive high-quality education and a commitment to empowering students and communities worldwide.

These achievements align with UOW’s Vision 2035 and aim to empower people, strengthen communities and build a resilient, sustainable world.
