Thesis title: The Art of Multispecies: Developing a sustainable art practice through care and collaboration
Developing a sustainable art practice through care and multispecies collaboration is an interdisciplinary creative research project that documents the process of becoming a sustainable artist through sculpture, drawing, public events, and writing. The project aims to explore how artists can collaborate with multispecies and the community to find alternative ways to engage with the challenges of sustainability. The practice-based research project will be designed using a hybrid model of socially engaged art, qualitative research, and care ethics. The Conservatory of Care, a 2022 pilot project will be merged with a new series of participatory ephemeral artworks, reflective writing, and participant observational interviews. Connections, insights, and spaces of knowing, and not knowing, will be examined through a feminist and a post-human lens. The role of culture and creativity in achieving sustainability will be critiqued against; socially engaged art, the embedded artist model, the current market orientated artworld, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Integrating art with multispecies aims to generate new conversations and ideas for creative practitioners working in the sustainability space.
