Overview

Primary teaching is a rewarding profession that can change lives, teaching all areas of the Australian primary curriculum. The Bachelor of Primary Education focuses on educating the 'whole child' and promotes lifelong learning in children.

This degree is a nationally accredited qualification for employment as a Kindergarten to Year 6 teacher in the public and independent school systems. You will undertake a school placement from the second year of your degree, allowing you to learn by observation and apply your skills in the classroom early in your degree.

During your studies you will have opportunities for rural and international professional experiences, to study overseas with UOW's international exchange and study abroad partners, and to join international cultural immersion programs.

UOW has strong community ties with schools and an extensive professional experience program. You will also have access to academic staff and career consultants, who provide services and support to increase your employability. The Bachelor of Primary Education is delivered as an on campus degree.

Accreditation & professional recognition

This degree is accredited and recognised as a national professional teaching qualification. All students will receive a national English/Literacy specialisation on successful completion of the program. A NSW specialisation in Mathematics/Numeracy is also available to students with relevant interest and aptitude.

  • Academic Entry Requirements

    Applicants must achieve the required score in a previous qualification, equivalent to completing at least 13 years of schooling in Australia.

Compulsory Work Based Placement
This course contains approximately 110 days of compulsory work-based placements, completed over 22 weeks (totaling 770 hours) throughout the degree. Placements usually occur in Illawarra, Shoalhaven, Southern Highlands, and Southern and South Western Sydney schools. Students can also apply for ‘out-of-area’ (rural NSW) or overseas professional experiences. Each student must complete placements in at least two different schools.  To be eligible for the first placement, students must complete 42 credit points, plus complete the subject Mathematics Foundations (EDMM101).

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

  • Record Check

    New enrolling students will be required to complete the new online and clearance must be obtained prior to attending Professional Experience.

    Please note: Professional Experience is a compulsory component embedded in our undergraduate and Master of Teaching courses. Therefore it is an expectation that students who participate in these courses are capable of meeting the demands of navigating their own way to, from and around the Professional Experience contexts (e.g. school sites). It needs to be noted that the off-campus environment is beyond the control of UOW.

  • Credit for Prior Learning

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

    Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.
