UOW's commitment to student safety
From dawn to dusk and dusk till dawn, UOW’s mission to keep your student safe.
August 6, 2025
If you’re doing the rounds of universities with your young person, exploring everything from degrees, careers and accommodation options, we know that campus security is probably at the top of your list. Well, worry no more, we have all the information you need to put your mind at ease so you can send them off with confidence.
On campus security
Whether you’re living on or off campus, UOW offers 24/7 security support. This means if your student needs to return home from a late-night study session at the library, they can call for a security escort at any hour. Whether they request an escort to their car or on campus accommodation, the friendly security staff are always ready to make sure they get there safely. Also, if your young person isn’t comfortable with hopping in a security vehicle, the staff are happy to shadow them as they walk to their destination.
With the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp campus security office located in close proximity to our on-site accommodation, they are only minutes away from being able to assist. Students can quickly connect with them by dialing #1 on the blue safety phones around the campus, by calling security directly, or by using the SafeZone app.
SafeZone app
UOW security monitors the activity on the SafeZone app 24/7. While it’s something that we all hope they’ll never have to use, it’s a nice feeling knowing that help is only a click away if they’re feeling uneasy on campus. If they’re out of the UOW SafeZone coverage area, it will let them know and prompt them to call Triple Zero, 000, if needed.
They can choose from the Emergency Alert, the Help Call icon, which instantly calls Security who will provide assistance, or the First Aid option that can be used for help with injuries.
In addition, UOW’s campuses have that eye in the sky, with Security CCTV cameras installed across campuses to support the safety of students, staff and visitors.
But wait, there’s more! If your student rides a bicycle to uni, they can also store their trusty two-wheeler in one of six locked bike bases, which also features CCTV cameras for that extra peace of mind.
Safe and Respectful Communities (SARC)
So, what if something does happen? UOW has a team of supportive, trauma-informed professionals called SARC who are passionate about taking care of students who experience or witness harassment, harm, bullying or discrimination. SARC can be contacted on 4221 3344 or via email uow-sarc@uow.edu.au.
SARC also work to prevent these incidents by promoting a respectful and caring culture among the students and staff. You may have seen a photo of our huge RESPECT sign! You can’t miss it.
Rest assured, your student is in great hands. Our staff members are specifically trained to provide appropriate support and, if necessary, take action to respond to incidents that occur.
Holistically supporting students’ wellbeing
It’s not just physical safety that we care about. We know that students thrive, academically and mentally when they’re holistically healthy. There are so many free and cost-effective services they can use from legal advice to counselling, academic workshops to a 24-hour wellbeing support line. Our ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp campus also provides a medical centre, pharmacy, and pathology services – everything students need to thrive, not just survive!
