Academic Governance at UOW
Academic Senate (Senate) is the principal academic body of the ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµapp. Established under section 15 of the ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµapp of ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµapp Act 1989, it serves as an advisory body to the ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµapp Council and the Vice-Chancellor.
Senate provides academic leadership across the ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµapp. It ensures that staff (academic and professional) and students are represented in decision making within the ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµapp. It works to maintain academic standards and contributes to safeguarding the academic freedom of the ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµapp.
Senate is supported by the following standing committees:
- Teaching and Learning Committee
- Research and Graduate Research Committee
- Course Quality Committee
- Collaborative Delivery Oversight Committee
A Chairs Committee assists with the coordination of business across the committees of Senate.

Meeting Observation
Academic Senate meetings are open for staff and students to observe.
If you would like to observe a meeting, contact the Senate Executive Officer in advance of the meeting.

Papers for the agenda
A call for agenda items is emailed to members and standing attendees five weeks before each meeting.
Reports and papers must be submitted via email using the appropriate template to the Senate Executive Officer at least three weeks before the meeting.

Questions-on-Notice gives members of the UOW Community an opportunity to raise queries with Senate via a current member or the Senate Executive Officer.
- All Questions-on-Notice will be passed to the Vice-Chancellor by the Chair of Academic Senate.
- The Vice-Chancellor will nominate the most suitable member to answer the questions.
- The member will provide an answer to questions at the next sitting of Academic Senate and the person who raised the question will be notified.
- Answers to the Question-on-Notice will be published in the meeting minutes and made available on this webpage.
Please note: For a question to be considered at Senate, it needs to be submitted at least four weeks prior to the meeting date.
