Research & HDR cyber safety

Protect your research information

Research and Higher Degree Research (HDR) students play a critical role in generating new knowledge and innovation. This work can make researchers targets for individuals or groups seeking unauthorised access to research information, intellectual property, or ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp systems.

Common risks for researchers and HDR students

As a researcher or HDR student, you may encounter:

Requests for information or login details

  • Attempts to obtain research or login details, including phishing emails, misleading opportunities, or people trying to build trust and later requesting inappropriate “favours”.

Sharing too much

  • Unintentional oversharing in collaborative or informal research settings, where sensitive information may be disclosed without realising it.

Unauthorised access

  • Foreign interference where individuals or organisations seek unauthorised access to research data, systems, or intellectual property through social engineering, credential theft, or cyber-attacks.

Why it matters

These situations can lead to:

  • Damage to research credibility.
  • Reduced commercialisation opportunities.
  • Harm to professional reputation.
  • Challenges securing future funding.

How to protect yourself and your research

  • Use strong passwords and enable multi‑factor authentication on all accounts.
  • Be cautious with unexpected emails, links, and websites, especially those asking for personal or research information.
  • Keep your UOW login details private and avoid using your university account for personal activities such as online shopping.

Travelling overseas as a research student

When travelling overseas, mobile phones and laptops may become targets for cyber attacks. A compromised device could affect the security of ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp systems and information.

Before you travel

UOW has a procedure for students travelling overseas with devices. It oulines what to do before, during and after travel.
