UOW takes responsibility for payroll errors, affirms Fair Work Enforceable Undertaking to ensure pay accuracy for all staff in future

The ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp of ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp (UOW) acknowledges the enforceable undertaking entered into with the Fair Work Ombudsman and accepts full responsibility for historic underpayments affecting current and former members of staff.

UOW self-disclosed staff underpayments to the Fair Work Ombudsman in 2023 and since then has been working with the regulator to ensure all affected staff are remediated in full and that all compliance issues are resolved.

UOW Vice-President (Operations) Mr Stephen Phillips apologised to staff impacted by the underpayments, which largely resulted from poor governance processes as well as fundamental payroll system errors.

“On behalf of the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp, I offer a sincere apology to all those affected. We deeply regret the distress and inconvenience caused to our staff by these errors,” Mr Phillips said.

“We are committed to fully remedying these underpayments and continue to work proactively to strengthen our systems and processes so that staff can have absolute confidence in the accuracy of their pay now and in the future.”

As part of the enforceable undertaking, the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp will complete more than $6.6 million in payments, including interest and superannuation, to over 5,300 affected employees. The large majority of whom have already been paid. UOW is still working to find and contact around 200 former employees who have not yet received their payments.

UOW will also make contrition payments and implement a broad range of improvements to systems, processes, and governance to safeguard against future errors. These actions include the implementation of new payroll controls, independent audits, staff training on Fair Work obligations, and establishing ongoing consultation with staff and representative unions.

UOW is committed to working closely with the Fair Work Ombudsman and to being fully transparent about our progress as we address all outstanding matters. The ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp remains focused on ensuring every affected employee receives their due entitlement and on strengthening our systems to ensure this will not happen again.
